Another summer documentary: The Corporation

Fri Jun 25, 2004 at 12:10:55 PM PDT

This seems to be a good summer for lefty documentaries, what with Fahrenheit 9/11 and a couple of others I've seen mentioned heare and there.  I want to draw your attention to another one you may not have heard of: The Corporation
The film tries to examine this monolithic organization type that has so dominated the 20th century.  Specifically, it's based on a recent book, "The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power" by Joel Bakan, one of the filmmakers.  The idea seems to be that, if a corporation is seen by the law as a legal "person", then we should judge them as persons, and if we do, it turns out they are pathological entities that we would lock up if they actually were people.

I think there's a lot more to it than that; I haven't seen it yet.  But that alone is enough for me.  It's opening here in NYC at the NY Film Forum just next week, and it's showing in other locations around the US and Canada.  I think a film like this could be one of the most important documentaries in a while - this is an issue that's very important to me.  I think if we can get people to wake up about to the abuses of power that large businesses are allowed to commit every day - to wake up to the necessity of limiting corporate power - it could have positive consequences more far-reaching and important than just replacing Bush with Kerry.

For lasting effects beyond November 2004, check it out, and bring a friend... spread the word.
