[Poll] Linux Users & wg311 question
Sat May 22, 2004 at 07:31:53 PM PDT
I'm installing Gentoo 2004.1 now, I used to have the 2.4 kernel version and decided I wanted to upgrade. Gentoo is the only flavor of Linux I have used for longer than a few weeks, others always seem to have issues. Red Hat won't let me install this package because another one has to be updated but it can't be updated until another one is which requires another dependency etc etc etc. Suse was ok, but I don't feel like buying it again and I can't do the net install because I have a wireless card which requires a kernel option which I doubt I can change on their ftp install thing.
Knoppix was ok last time I used it but for whatever reason my mouse didn't work. I probably didn't set a kernel option correctly when it booted, pebcak error no doubt. I tried debian 2 years ago but the install documents were atrocious and I couldn't figure out how to install X. I tried to get the latest version of Mandrake to install but I could not figure out which iso I needed. The one I thought I needed turned out not to be bootable, not so minor problem...
I was called by a Kerry money begger
Fri May 21, 2004 at 10:31:30 AM PDT
the other day at like 9 in the morning. It was definately an attempt to shake me down for more cash, they mentioned the convention deadline and how important it was to give before then. He did this in all of about 5 seconds I was impressed. However as soon as I said I had to go to a doctors appointment "right now" (I did) he said have a nice day and hung up. Very professional and very agressive.
I'm not sure what the point of this diary is. Did you know the audiologists are making a Doctor of Audiology? It's a new thing. 3 cheers for degree inflation :)
Help Save Marriage!
Thu May 20, 2004 at 11:16:15 AM PDT
I was utterly shocked after reading this piece in the Times. First, any divorce goes against God. To say I am dissappointed with "no fault" "divorce" would be an understatement. People should remain with each other till death do them part. That's what they swore, that's what they should be held to. Now we have another abomination spreading across the country like wildfire, it's legal in 35 states, which threatens Holy Matrimony even more so than "no fault divorce."
It's called "collaborative divorce." Now couples don't even have to go to court and pass under the 10 commandments before violating their sacred oath. They can simply work out their blasphemy with Lucifer's lawyers! No need to be reminded of the gravity of their oath, the oath can be severed with even fewer second thoughts than before.
Help support Focus on the Family defend the second most sacred institution.
[Poll] Calling all econ majors
Mon May 17, 2004 at 09:38:17 PM PDT
During my school's graduation (Jon Stewart was our commencement speaker, have I mentioned that enough? :)) I was struck that the econ majors got B.A. degrees which gives me a new perspective on economists. I had previously, naively, thought they got B.S. degrees, why? Because of how so many economists seem to act like scientists.
To me they are now just like sociologists, anthropologists, psychologists, etc. I might love Soc (heck I minored in it, great subject I highly recommend it to anybody who can still do so) but it's not a real science. Sure you can investigate social and economic phenomonae but in the end you just can't predict the future in more than extremely vague ways. I've heard tell that less than half of the "experts" predicted the Soviet Union would fall. This's why they all get B.A.s and not B.S.s, they are arts, not sciences. Don't feel bad B.A. degree holders, you have amoung you Van Gogh, Mozart, Krugman, Dali, Sor, etc. We have Newton, Galileo, Einstein, Sagan, Hawkings, etc. I'd be proud belong to either group.
Perhaps I should have known and would have realized had I given it more than a few seconds' thought. Maybe I'm just totally off here, I know I've been before.
[POLL] Mass gay marraige & flowers
Wed May 12, 2004 at 10:58:52 PM PDT
I emailed
massequality asking about queer friendly flower shops so we can buy flowers for mass couples as in San Francisco. (I'm sorry to the other person who did so I forgot your name) I've gotten an email back and they said they're gonna pass on the email to somebody can help me.
To the person who suggested emailing their Unitarian Church (I'm sorry I forgot your name as well. I gotta problem with names), I haven't gotten anything back from them yet, maybe they will respond to your emails? Thanks for the idea.
We still have a few more days until marriage is truly equal in Mass, still time to get this thing working.
[Poll] Eagle Scouts
Wed May 12, 2004 at 07:06:34 PM PDT
Are you an Eagle Scout? Are you dissappointed with the Boy Scouts of America?
I'm both, it's a shame such a worthy program has been corrupted by bigots, thankfully the Girls Scouts are not overrun with fundies.
Flowers & Massachusetts May 17th
Sat May 08, 2004 at 06:59:31 PM PDT
Ok, does anybody know of any flower shops in Massachusetts which are owned by Gay Friendly owners? Does anybody know anybody in Massachusetts who might know?
Hopefully we can get something going like what happened for San Francisco.
We have one week to find this out. Let's get cracking :)

Music & Randi Rhodes
Wed May 05, 2004 at 02:19:53 PM PDT
You can download that song just heard on Randi Rhodes from
here. It's free but you do have to make an account.
The song is pretty good.
How many people are planning on watching the Friend's finale tomorrow? I know some people don't like it but I find it funny.
Kerry has won me over

Food prices jumping
Sat May 01, 2004 at 10:00:24 AM PDT
The prices on basic food has been jumping up lately. Cheese, eggs, chicken, bacon (best meat ever), and apples to name a few.
Some claim it's a response to artificially low prices, but whatever the cause prices are inflating. Are wages increasing to help buy these more expensive foods? Or are wages going to pay increased local taxes?

Anti-Choice Protester Arrested for Fetus Possession
Sat Apr 24, 2004 at 05:14:04 PM PDT
This is pretty gross, apparently he
had a fetus in side of a glass jar.
I guess this is just further escalation in the rhetoric of anti-choicers, first they have pictures of fetuses on placards and the next logical (or is it...) step is to have actual fetuses.
My question is how did he get it? Did he take it from the trash? Did he steal it? The disposal of this sort of stuff is a heavily controlled. Would an abortion doctor actually give it to him? Something's fishy here.
Condi & Mars Attacks
Sun Apr 18, 2004 at 07:32:35 PM PDT
I was inspired by
this diary to make the following picture. It's my first attempt at "photoshoping" (I used
gimp instead of photoshop) so please go easy on me.
If I had mader skills I'd have made the hair go under the helmet to her right instead of over.
I am the perfect progressive
Wed Apr 14, 2004 at 07:33:33 PM PDT
How dare you consider voting for Kerry or Bush.
Only I can lead you to the promised land of progressive heaven. Only I can lead the march of millions through the bogged marshes of corporate sludge. Only I have the compass, only I have the map, only I and I alone can be your guide and pilot.
Electronic voting & trust
Thu Apr 08, 2004 at 10:21:22 PM PDT
Why you can never totally trust electronic voting. I'm a CS major, I'm not some luddite who's afraid of technology.

Navy cutting doctors

I have no evidence for this except my chat with my doctor yesterday.
